I don’t know about you, but here in western Virginia, a hint of fall is in the air. Lower humidity, crisp blue skies during the day, and cool evenings – it feels fantastic!

For most families, the kids get back to school routines, vacations wrap up, and everyone settles into their routine for fall and winter. This also means that September might be your last chance to do some more gardening, maybe preserve some of the late summer harvest, plant some cool weather crops, and tidy up the garden before cooler weather comes.

Something about turning the calendar and feeling the cool breeze fuels your motivation, doesn’t it?

You think, plan, and jot down notes on things to do this fall, especially in the garden.

“Let’s plan everything beforehand,” you think. “Where I’m going to put the garden, when I need to plant everything, when I need to order seeds. That way, I’ll get everything ready on time and actually enjoy some fall veggies this year!”

And then, life happens.

Life REALLY happens.

The kids come home with colds.

The furnace isn’t working when you turn it on.

The schedule fills with work, school, and family responsibilities.

And your good intentions for the fall garden (and everything else on your to-do list)? You think they’re wedged somewhere between the kids and the pile of stuff on the kitchen table, but that’s about it.

And you know what? That’s OKAY, even when it comes to your garden.

Planning is very important, I’ll admit that. But really, the first official day of fall is just happening now, so you still have a few more days to plant some cool weather crops and tidy up the garden before cooler weather hits, especially if you live in one of the states that stays warmer longer than other areas of the country. It’s also time to bring in the late harvest and make best use of it, so you don’t waste any of that bounty. 🙂
