Also known as “French spinach”,  this stunning green is not only delicious when used as a savory type of “spinach”, but it’s also a beautiful ornamental. It originated in Egypt and Europe as a favorite cold season crop. In addition to being eaten, the leaves have been used as a medicinal and the seeds can be used to make blue dye or even flour!

Greens – Orach Red Fire – Atriplex hortensis

Soil & Water: Requires moderately fertile soil and moderate water.

Planting & Growing: Hardy annual. Start seeds indoors 3 weeks before last spring frost. You may use succession planting every 2 weeks until midsummer, to get a continuous harvest. This green grows well in the warmer temps that make regular spinach bolt.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest like any other green, eating immediately.
