Happy Back to School Season!
We usually see the back to school season through the lens of notebooks, pencils, and chalk. But what if education extended outside the classroom? What if it even extended into the GARDEN?
Think about it for a moment. There are so many lessons everyone can learn in the garden, whether you’re a child or an adult.
The Garden Has Lessons for Kids
Given that you’re living in 21st century America, there’s a good chance your kids don’t know where their food comes from. Even if you eat a lot of fresh produce, they’re so used to picking carrots from the grocery bin and apples from the fruit drawer that they might not realize exactly how they’re grown.
During childhood, kids learn about everything in the world. So why not teach them about one of the essential aspects of life: food?
Teach them where food comes from, how it grows, and how it doesn’t grow.
Teach them how God designed the earth to function. In the garden, you learn how seeds grow plants and how genetics work. You learn how some insects pollinate plants, while others lay eggs on them (and when). You learn how rain and sunshine play a part in the growing process, everything working together and producing something delicious.
Gardening is like one big science project…something you can EAT when you’re finished!
In addition, kids learn valuable character traits in the garden. Patience (plants don’t produce overnight). Gratitude (not everything is easy to grow). Hard work (picking tomatoes isn’t as easy as it looks in the grocery store). And so much more.
Whether your children go to school or you homeschool them, there are lessons to be learned in the garden!
The Garden Has Lessons for Adults Too!
Of course, even if you don’t have children in your life, there are still plenty of valuable lessons in the garden for you. During this season of renewed educational goals, it’s time to refocus on the important things…like where food comes from.
Teach yourself how to grow a favorite food and save yourself money in the time of rising food costs and increasing inflation.
Remind yourself how much effort and patience goes into growing food, and how you really shouldn’t rely on somebody else always doing it for you, especially in our current times.
And while you’re planting seeds and growing food, invite family members, friends, and neighbors into your garden and kitchen. Teach them how everything works, so they won’t be taken captive by the food misconceptions that threaten our food supply and food liberties. Plus, everyone could use with a little fresh air and sunshine sometimes!
There are so many lessons to learn in the garden this time of year, especially if you plant a fall garden!

Learn More About Fall Gardening…
Fall gardening poses some challenges and timing constraints, so we’ve published a blog series on the topic. It covers all of the details fall gardeners need to know, including soil, location, and space considerations, laying out a new fall garden, calculating important dates, using season extension, and more.
Calculate Your Fall Planting Dates
To help make planning that garden easy, I’ve created a FREE Fall Planting Calculator that will help you determine exactly which crops you can still plant and what the latest date is that you can plant them and still enjoy a harvest before fall sets in and it’s too cold.
