Description
If you’re looking for something unique to grow in your garden, why not try this “Mountain Spinach.” The leaves are red, but won’t turn green when they are cooked! May be used raw or cooked. (There are usually some all-green plants too.)
Greens – Orach Ruby Red – Atriplex hortensis
Soil & Water: Requires moderately fertile soil and moderate water.
Planting & Growing: Hardy annual. Start seeds indoors 3 weeks before last spring frost. You may use succession planting every 2 weeks until midsummer, to get a continuous harvest. This green grows well in the warmer temps that make regular spinach bolt.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest like any other green, eating immediately.
