Description
Grow this favorite kitchen spice in your own garden! Provides an earthy, sweet/bitter flavor that’s essential for Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mexican cooking. Known to attract predatory insects like parasitoid wasps and ladybird beetles, but repels caterpillars/aphids. This member of the parsley family is an annual.
Cumin – Cuminum cyminum
Soil & Water: Prefers loamy, well-draining soil. Do NOT overwater – cumin is especially susceptible to problems like root rot and mildew.
Planting & Growing: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before your spring frost and transplant into the garden once true leaves appear. Or direct sow once temperatures stay about 50 degrees F. Plant close together so the plants will support each other.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest plump, dark tan seeds once foliage has died back. Cut the entire stem and hang upside down in a paper bag to dry and catch the seeds. Leaves may also be harvested when large enough to eat in salads.
