Description
Gorgeous dry corn from Virginia that produces deep red colored kernels on large, 8-10” cobs. (Occasionally, it produces white or blue kernels too.) Yummy sweet flavor, making it perfect for cornmeal and roasting. Also, this corn has been used as a base for sour mash whiskey or used as an animal feed.
Corn – Bloody Butcher – Zea mays
Soil & Water: Corn is a heavy feeder requiring high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). Its weak and shallow root system likes loose soil with a high compost content.
Planting & Growing: Sow seeds directly outdoors 1 week after the last frost. You can start earlier by using black or green plastic mulches and floating row covers to obtain optimum conditions. Plant in blocks rather than rows to ensure good germination. To prevent cross-pollination, plant different varieties at least 500′.
Harvesting & Storage: Ripe corn usually has a small amount of green silk near the top with dry, brownish silk at the ends. Did You Know? Corn is rich in protein and contains many minerals.
