Description
Plant this beautiful flowering vine and enjoy a tower of red blooms that attract swarms of hummingbirds. Growing to 10 feet tall in a season, this productive vine produces thick walled, textured pods that are tender and stringless at 6-7 inches long, staying succulent up to 10-12 inches. Early and slow to develop seed for a long harvest window. Keep picking the delicious bean pods all summer long to promote more flowers. For dried beans, pick mature pods. Bean seeds are black, mottled with red.
Beans – Lady Di – Phaseolus coccineus
Soil and Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering which can promote disease.
Planting and Growing: This vine needs a good trellis for its vigorous summer show. Start indoors in short-season climates, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65°F, preferably after the last frost.
Harvesting and Storage: Pick continually to keep the crop coming. Harvest pods before the bean seeds inside make the pod fat.
