Description

This productive, continuously yielding lima bean variety has gone by many other names, but regardless of the name, it has stood the test of time, producing 3-4 buttery white beans inside each of its pods. Considered excellent for preserving, these lima beans can be grown in many different areas of the country, though it was first discovered in Lynchburg, Virginia before being introduced to the public!

Bush Lima Bean – Henderson (AKA, Wood’s Prolific, Dwarf Butter Bean, Baby Lima) – Phaseolus lunatus

Soil & Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering, which can promote disease. While planting limas, make sure the soil is warm and not overly wet. One source suggests soaking the seeds for a few hours in warm water before planting.

Planting & Growing: Start indoors in short-season climates, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65F, preferably after the last frost. Make small, successive plantings every 10 to 14 days for a continuous harvest.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest fresh for eating or leave the pods on the plant until they have completely dried. Harvest often to encourage additional production. Store dry, shelled beans in an airtight container.
