Description
This variety of basil produces 2.5″ leaves that taste sweet and intensively tangy, like citrus fruit! Edible white blossoms may also be used in cooking.
Basil – Mrs. Burns’ Lemon – Ocimum basilicum var. citriodora
Soil & Water: Plant in full sun in well-draining soil. Basil does not require fertile soil, however it performs best when organic matter is added. Provide even water throughout development.
Planting & Growing: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, or sow directly once soil temperatures have reached at least 70F. Pinch ends during development for a bushy plant. Basil has a very low germination rate; it is not uncommon to have germination rates of 60%. Sow heavily and thin to the most vigorous seedlings. Basil will not perform below 50F; pot indoors during winter for a year-round supply.
Harvesting & Storage: Regular harvesting will keep production high. Use leaves fresh or frozen. Remove flower stalks to extend harvest. Be sure to make the last harvest prior to first frost.
