In the silence, we bustle. In the frost, we beckon heat. In the darkness, we long for something brighter. But what if we’re missing the best parts of the season and what’s really happening around us?

Especially during the holidays, we become so absorbed in the man-made that we often forget to pay attention to the natural rhythms God has built into the world around us. With the flick of a switch, we transform night into day within our own homes, but outside…away from the bustle, away from the artificial…is reality.

That’s one of the most glorious parts of gardening: It forces you back into nature, where you can fully appreciate the seasonal changes, and learn to flow with them, even if you don’t understand their importance. To everything there is a season, and there’s something healthy and natural about living seasonally (inside and outside of the garden).

That’s why I’m asking you to take a moment this weekend to look outside and appreciate the natural beauty winter brings.

Why now? Well, Dec 21st presents a celestial event that heralds the end of the shortening days, the birth of new hope…longer days and a brighter season that, though it appears an infinity away now, comes closer by each sunrise.

Happy Winter Solstice!

To celebrate this dawn of new hope and look forward to the brighter days ahead in the garden…
