This variety produces yellow, bronze, and purple colored flowers. Flower buds and petals are even edible (bittersweet flavor)!
Sunflower – Autumn Beauty – Helianthus annuus
Soil & Water: Loose, well-drained soil is ideal but sunflowers will tolerate poor soil. If growing in poor soil, add a balanced fertilizer with higher phosphorus. Moderate water is best.
Planting & Growing: Direct sow after last spring frost, or start inside 2 weeks earlier. Plant 2-3 seeds every foot, and thin to 18″ apart once seedlings are 3″ tall.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when the back of the seed head turns brown. Prompt harvest means more seeds for you, and less for the birds. Remove seeds from seed head by rubbing two heads together, or rubbing with your hand. Store seeds in cloth bags with good air circulation.
