Description

NOTE: Sorry, but horseradish is only available for shipping to US customers (excluding Hawaii).

Horseradish Armoracia rusticana

Planting: Plant immediately upon receipt. Dig a trench 4-6″ deep. Plant root pieces at a slight angle.

Soil & Growing Conditions: Prefers rich, well-draining soil and regular water. Don’t fertilize until established. If you plant it in containers, it needs a LOT of space.

Harvest: Horseradish is typically harvested in late fall, after the first frost, which helps to mellow the root’s flavor and enhances its pungency. To harvest, carefully dig around the base of the plant to avoid damaging the roots, then pull out the large, thick roots that have developed underground. The main root is usually the largest and most flavorful, but smaller side roots can also be collected. After harvesting, the roots should be cleaned thoroughly to remove soil but left unwashed until ready for use or storage to prolong freshness. Properly harvested and stored horseradish roots can last several months in a cool, dark place or refrigerated environment.  The leaves can also be used to add a spicy flavor to salads and other dishes.
