Description

Staro chives produce thicker leaves than other varieties, making it a good choice for preservation uses, like freezing. Blooms are a purplish color. Perennial.

Chives – Staro – Allium schoenoprasum

Soil & Water: Chives like loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water evenly and moderately while establishing.

Planting & Growing: Start 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soils have reached 55F. Chives grow slowly and usually need about a year of growth before they can be routinely harvested. They can be potted and moved indoors to provide a fresh supply for cooking all year.

Harvesting & Storage: Snip leaves when large enough to use. The flowers are also edible and have a mild oniony flavor. Harvest flowers before they open completely to avoid reseeding tendencies.
