Never heard of sorrel? It’s one of the yummiest leafy green herbs you can grow in your garden, providing a unique, lemon-like flavor. (Sorrel was actually used in Europe for this purpose in cooking before citrus fruit became more readily available.) It’s also been used medicinally as a tonic, diuretic, antioxidant, diarrhea remedy, and more. It is incredibly rich in vitamin C and other important nutrients. Also used as an ingredient in Essiac tea. In cooking, it is great for adding to salads, soups, side dishes, curries, and more. Hardy perennial.
IMPORTANT: Sheep sorrel spreads readily by the roots and seeds, so it is difficult to eradicate once planted. Make sure you plant this in an area where you don’t mind it being for the long term. Pruning the seed heads will limit its spread.
Sorrel, Sheep – Rumex acetosella
Planting: In the spring, dig and plant sorrel crowns in the ground. This plant doesn’t take long to start growing in the garden and can be harvested the first year.
Soil & Growing Conditions: Sorrel grows in many different types of climates and soils, returning back year after year, but it is often found in acidic, dry soil in the wild.
Harvest:Â Harvest young leaves once established. Every spring, it is one of the first leafy green herbs to sprout and be available to eat.
