Description

Thin, round leaves of chives are commonly used in soups and sauces, and this variety is commonly used in Oriental dishes. The plant grows in clumps, with leaves reaching about 12″ high and flowers stretching up to 30″ high. It produces white flowers. Chives are useful as a companion plant throughout the garden to help reduce the insect population.

Chives – Garlic (Chinese Leeks) – Allium tuberosum

Soil & Water: Chives like loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water evenly and moderately while establishing.

Planting & Growing: Start 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soils have reached 55F. Chives grow slowly and usually need about a year of growth before they can be routinely harvested. They can be potted and moved indoors to provide a fresh supply for cooking all year.

Harvesting & Storage: Snip leaves when large enough to use, cutting leaves at ground level. The flowers are also edible. Harvest flowers before they open completely to avoid reseeding tendencies. Even if you aren’t using these chives regularly, continue cutting back the plant, or it will become tough!
