Linking Instructions

If you want to direct traffic to a particular page on the site, just be sure to include the following text at the end of the link:

?ref=001  (where 001 is your affiliate ID #)

It would be extremely helpful to us if you could add additional tracking parameters to your links so that we know where the traffic is coming from (i.e. from your Facebook page, from your Pinterest account, etc.).  I’ve created a link creator for affiliates that you can add your info into and it creates the coded tracking link so that I can see the data in Google Analytics. Get it here:

SFG Link Creator for Affiliates
Types of pages you can link to:

  • Homepage – default
  • About – good for sharing our story out and/or engaging people who care about family gardening or family business
  • Garden Planning Calculator – promote this winter through early summer, which provides tremendous value to users in planning their crop timelines.
  • Fall Planting Calculator – promote this mid-summer through the fall, instead of the Garden Planning Calculator above
  • Blog  – good for sharing our (at this time limited # of) articles and videos on gardening techniques and tips
  • Category/tag pages – the links in the dropdown navigation on the site that are not named for a specific type of plant (lettuce, carrot, etc.) can be used effectively as pages to link to any time you’re talking about a particular topic (cool weather crops, root crops, etc.)
  • Crop variety pages – the links in the dropdown menu named for a type of veggie will display all the specific varieties we sell for that type (all carrots, all tomatoes, etc.)
  • Individual product pages – each product has its own page that has product info and growing information on it.  These would be used if you were recommending a specific variety of seeds.

What, you haven’t met?

Well, let’s change that. I’d like to introduce you to Seeds for Generations.

They’re a small, family-owned seed business based out of Virginia that shares their love of gardening with people around the world. They sell only 100% heirloom, non-GMO seeds, and a growing selection of other gardening-related products, including books.

They also have an awesome affiliate program that you should really consider joining ASAP, so you can promote during the one of the busiest seed buying seasons we’ve ever seen (right now)!

When you join their affiliate program, you can start playing an active role in training new gardeners and preserving the genetic heritage found in heirloom seeds….while earning commissions at the same time!

And here’s what I love most about the affiliate program: They make promotions easy…basically without promoting products at all!

WHAT? Well, let me explain.

Seeds for Generations offers affiliates two different kinds of lead magnets to promote, in addition to their content on their blog:

  • Free online training and resources.
  • Free planning tools, like planting calculators.

These online training sessions and free planning tools make great resources for new and experienced gardeners alike, resources where they learn how to plan a productive garden, start seeds indoors, schedule a planting timeline, plan a fall garden plot, and much more. You promote these “freebies” to your audience, and they generate email optins that allow Seeds for Generations to do follow-up email marketing to your leads, making commissions for you much more likely.

For full details about Seeds for Generations’ affiliate program, please visit their website here.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK (That’s my affiliate link.)

Seeds for Generations also provides swipe copy, graphics, and personalized support from Jason, who has years of experience in affiliate marketing both for his own businesses and on behalf of affiliate partners. If you have questions about making the most of this opportunity, he’s always there to help.

In addition, Seeds for Generations has several exciting promotions planned. So if you sign up as an affiliate now, you will have the opportunity to be one of the first people to hear about their new products, new content, and more…

…and one of the first to share it with your audience, thus increasing your chance for commissions even more.

Supporting new gardeners on their quest to grow more food for themselves and become less dependent upon the commercialized, health-weakening food systems is one of the most important things you could ever do, especially this year. And it’s even better that you could earn an additional stream of income while doing it!

That’s why I highly encourage you to get behind Seeds for Generations’ mission this year.

Join Seeds for Generations now.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK (Once again, that’s my affiliate link. Thanks for your support. 😉 )

Seed Shop Fire 2023

Seed Shop Fire

Through the years, I’ve spoken often about my passion for gardening and small business. I love connecting with others who understand the importance of self-production and growing your own food, people like you!

Well…sometimes that means supporting people through hard times.

This past Saturday, the sweet family at Seeds for Generations had a devasting fire in their shop building that houses their heirloom seed and gardening business. It looks like an electrical source started it, and since nobody was in the building when it started, it was out of control by the time anyone noticed.

You can see the heartbreaking pictures here.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

The fire destroyed most, if not all, of their product inventory and office equipment and they have to start all over again.

Seeds for Generations is this family’s full-time income, and their efforts also support other small business owners, including gardening experts and homesteaders. The Matyas family is working furiously to get things back up and running as quickly as possible, since this is their busiest season of the year.

A friend of theirs was gracious enough to set up a fundraiser for them to help with the many, many upfront expenses they will be facing in the days ahead.

I know you have a passion about gardening and homesteading too, so I’d like to share the fundraiser with you and ask if you’d consider supporting this family during this tragic loss.

Learn more about the fundraiser here.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Thank you so much,

Gardeners stick together, don’t we?

As you know, it’s the most important season of the year, as folks are purchasing seeds and planning for their gardens. Which also means it was especially tragic when Seeds for Generations – a family heirloom seed business – lost their seed shop to a devasting fire over the weekend. It destroyed most of their inventory and supplies, which means they are starting all over again. Gardeners understand one of the basics of life: that if you plant seeds, you can grow food. And that’s one of the most important ways to stabilize your food supply chain, secure your family against economic and social uncertainty, and provide healthy, delicious food for your local community, no matter what’s happening across the country.

Historically, families living in rural areas and producing most of their own essentials (especially food), have been in a better position to weather coming storms, and this has been proven true around the world (not just here in America)!

This could be the most important time to grow food!

But seeds alone aren’t enough. You also have to get a calculated plan ready, so you can get the most food possible from those seeds (or sometimes, know what seeds you even need in the first place).

As we approach the garden planning season, I’d like to remind you about this free Garden Planting Calculator! It will turn the process of calculating your planting from taking hours of time, to just seconds.

Check out the tool here.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

But don’t just take it from me! Listen to what one user had to say: “All I can say is WOW. Thank you so much for creating this but more than that, for sharing it with others.” -C. Harris

This calculator allows you to input your Last Average Spring Frost Date and provides you with the following for 46 types of crops:
• Germination timelines for all crop types
• Germination temperatures for optimal results
• For plants that need to be started as seedlings, then transplanted into the garden, the Indoor Start Date
• For plants that are direct seeded, the earliest date to plant them outdoors
• For seedlings, the earliest transplant date relative to the last frost
• AND, it provides you with forecast earliest harvest dates based on the days to maturity for each crop

We’re starting planting season soon, so please don’t wait too long to get your garden dates calculated. It will be time to plant your first seeds soon…

Did you know tomatoes and potatoes shouldn’t be planted together?

That’s just one of the surprising combinations you’ll discover when you start learning about companion planting, a gardening method that takes advantage of natural plant interactions while gardening.

Why is this so important?

Because whether you realize it or not, plants have relationships with each other.

Some combinations exist happily next to each other, while other combinations more closely mimic a family feud. Understanding how each plant relates to the other crops in your garden helps you harness the beneficial relationships for growing healthy, happy crops…while avoiding negative plant relationships that might hamper your garden’s productivity without you realizing it.

Confused yet?

It doesn’t have to be hard!

In fact, my friends over at Seeds for Generations have a free tool that will make your companion planting simple and easy!

It’s called the Companion Planting Matrix.

What if we’re still in the middle of garden planting season NOW?

A lot of gardeners plant their gardens once, but if you’re serious about growing most of your own food, successive planting techniques provide you more harvest opportunities. “Succession planting” is when you continuously plant in intervals, with the goal of harvesting a mature crop from the same space repeatedly throughout the season. Not only does it produce more harvest for your efforts, but it also makes efficient use of limited gardening space.

What’s the biggest problem with succession planting, the thing that’s holding gardeners back from more produce? Figuring planting dates!

Especially for new gardeners, it’s tricky to calculate those intervals for different types of crops based on your growing season length. Instead of trying to figure out your own calculations and track down all of the information from different places, use my friends’ free Succession Planting Calculator here!<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

This Succession Planting Calculator will help you make calculated efforts to plant continuously, for increased crops when you need them. Enter your frost date, and you’ll automatically get planting dates for 32 common garden crops.

Quick and easy to use, even for new gardeners!

Optimize your garden’s production by ensuring that you plant successively and get the best production from your garden, this year and beyond.

What’s the temperature where you live?

If it’s anything like where I live, it’s mighty chilly. 🙂 One of the only things that gets me through these gloomy days of winter is browsing seed varieties and making plans for my garden, and seed starting marks the first step toward a warmer time of year. 🙂

I know many gardeners out there purchase their seedlings from the store. But if you’re serious about growing a healthy, successful garden that will give you LOTS of yummy produce (especially these days, with inflation and skyrocketing prices hitting hard), you should consider starting your own seeds instead.

Once you know the basics, it’s quite doable, and it offers you a wider range of varieties, especially if you’re planting tomatoes and peppers. You can’t purchase some heirloom tomatoes, for example, at your local mega store, but you CAN plant your own seedlings. (Plus, you’ll have no worries about how they were grown, or whether the seedlings will acclimate to your garden properly after being babied in a commercial greenhouse.)

And here’s the deal: Seed starting season starts VERY SOON!

Where do I BEGIN on the topic of growing your own seedlings?

There are so many benefits! Personally, I prefer growing seedlings over buying them, because it provides a greater variety in my garden. I can plant my own tomato or pepper varieties that are hard to come by, for example. I also have full control over how they’re raised from the very beginning, which also means they’re more likely to “take” when planted in the garden later.

Want to learn how to start and tend your own seedlings too? Check out this free online training that will teach you the ropes: <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Starting seeds might not be as easy as you think…

I mean, yes, it’s simple. Anyone can do it. BUT there are a few things you should know before you start it, or you will might be caught by common mistakes like not hardening off your seedlings properly…and trust me, you don’t want to destroy all of that hard work with a tiny mistake that could have just as easily been avoided!

Get started with homegrown seedlings the right way, in this free training: <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Social Swipe #3:

I plant lots of tomatoes every year. Every February, my window space looks like it was taken hostage by seedlings! Why so many? Well…I love tomatoes, for starters. But growing them myself also gives me full control over what kinds of tomatoes I plant and how they’re raised.

But I’ll admit that I have a, uh, history with seedlings. I made some mistakes when I was first starting out, things that could have easily been avoided if I’d just known a few important things first.

Don’t make the same mistakes I did! Arm yourself with the knowledge you need to make your seedlings a success. Join this free training on seed starting to learn more: <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Fall Gardening Training

Do you really want to squeeze a few more harvests out of your growing season to fill your pantry and help get more from your tightening food budget?

That’s just one of many excellent reasons to consider planting a fall garden. Not only does it extend your growing season a few more weeks or months (depending on where you live and what specific methods you employ), but it also produces superior cold weather crops like leafy greens and root veggies, since the lower temperatures develop their sweetness and flavor.

Of course, to do that, you need to make preparations and plans well in advance…long before the first frost hits.

That means it’s time to start planning and even planting NOW, even though it’s still summer outside!

My friend Jason over at Seeds for Generations has been fall gardening for years now, and he’s sharing a free online training session that will teach you the basics you need to know about planting your own fall garden.

In this free training, he will cover:
• What crops to plant in a fall garden
• How to use your first average fall frost date to plan your plantings
• How to optimize the use of your available garden space to maximize production
• How to use successive plantings to keep fresh produce coming as long as possible
• How to use season extension tools and methods to keep your garden producing into the winter

Save your spot here, so you’re equipped with the basics!<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Think of it this way…

In the spring, you’re operating on the premise that temperatures grow from cold to warm to hot. You’re relying on pollination and growth patterns consistent with that kind of seasonal progression.

But in the fall…it’s the reverse. As temperatures slowly fall, plant growth begins to slow down too, showing how critical planting at the right time is. There’s just not a lot of margin for error or changing your mind later.

Don’t let yourself make those mistakes! Learn from this lifelong gardener and well-known teacher instead. His training session will equip you with all of the things you need to know to make your fall growing season a productive success.

Do you think your growing season ends the moment the first frost arrives? Think again!

There are ways to extend your harvest past those first few frosts, and even longer if you know what you’re doing! And it comes with many different benefits, too!

Season extension is a unique gardening technique that also allows you to…

…increase your garden harvests, giving you another chance to preserve more veggies and herbs for winter (an increasingly important thing to do these days).

…save money on grocery bills, since it allows you to eat from the garden for longer periods of a time than you would otherwise.

…enjoy delicious flavors, some of which you’ll only find developed in cool weather. (Have you tasted cool weather leafy greens and root crops? SO GOOD.)

…make the most of your summer garden work, while also fighting fewer bugs than in warm weather.

…and more too!

If you want to learn more about this important, but oft-overlooked topic, check out my friends’ new training on it here! <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

What if I told you that a lot of gardeners miss an AMAZING opportunity this time of year?

Sure, it’s cold outside and there typically isn’t much growing in the ground. But it also marks the end of the main growing season and everything that happened before winter arrived.

Every gardening year is a different experience, a chance to learn more about yourself, your plants, your soil, your climate, and yes, even your garden’s greatest enemies too. If you’re not measuring and managing what you learned and experienced, you can’t build upon it in the next year.

As we reflect upon the past year and look forward to planning for 2025’s gardens, I’d like to invite you to join my friends’ free training about How to Do a Gardening Year in Review, including:
• How gardening methods & techniques you used did or didn’t work
• How to assess production projects & ideas you tried for the first time or expanded this year
• What significant problems like pests & diseases you faced
• How did your garden yield for both fresh harvests & preserved food

A great chance to settle down and make plans for next year. (And since some seeds need started as early as January, I’m not kidding, it’s JUST in the nick of time!)

As you know, I’m a big supporter of small businesses, family side hustles, and cottage industries.

There are several reasons why. For starters, when I buy from a good small business, I know my money isn’t going to support, well, people who hate everything I value. I know what I’m buying is supporting real people, real families, who are working hard together and want to serve their customers with excellence and joy.

I also would really rather depend on small businesses than Big Box stores, because those Big Box stores are quite vulnerable to shocks in supply and demand, like what happened in 2020. Long-term, I know where I want my money going (and I know they’re going to be more careful about what they sell too, in terms of quality).

But you know what? Even with all of those reasons, there’s another reason too.

Small businesses have the BEST stories. 🙂

They usually stem out of life circumstances and principles that resonate with all of us – whether we own a business or not.

It’s not a far-away factory in the middle of China inventorying impersonal items via robots to a big warehouse somewhere. With family businesses also come stories of hard work, endurance in difficult times, celebration in successful seasons, and hope for the future.

And one of those family businesses is Seeds for Generations.

This is a family heirloom seed business owned and operated by the Matyas family in Virginia. A decade ago this year, Jason Matyas was looking for a way to start a cottage industry to work together with his family. He realized they loved gardening and heirloom seeds, so why not share those passions with the world?

Well, it took off!

And now, they’re shipping seeds and other gardening supplies to families just like ours, all around the country and even some places around the world too.

Now, they’re expanding their collection even further with NEW Digital Libraries of resources designed to help you and your family grow more food next year, without worrying about finding space to put more books on your bookshelf. <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

They just told me about these libraries and I’ve got to say – they look amazing! They’re collections of eGuides, charts, and tools that will help you throughout the entire gardening season, and there are libraries tailored towards both new and uber experienced gardeners.

These digital libraries are 50% off for a limited time, making them more affordable than ever, so why not check them out & support a great family business at the same time?

Complete Growing Herbs Library:

Newsflash: You don’t know what real herbs taste like!

At least, that’s true if you’re the average American. Most spice bottles at the supermarket are overpriced and woefully underdeliver in flavor, simply because they’re been processed so long ago.

And the fresh herbs at the supermarket? They’re wilted and get icky before you know it.

There’s really no better way to enjoy the REAL flavors and aromas of herbs than by growing them yourself, at home, right in your own garden or backyard.

And with this new collection of digital resources from my friends at Seeds for Generations, you can learn just that! <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

This library includes:

Gardening doesn’t STOP with seeds.

Many of the most versatile plants are actually perennials that you start with live cuttings instead of seeds.

One of those crops is a personal favorite: Elderberry.

Elderberries have exploded in popularity, and for good reason. The fruit is amazing and useful for making pies, wines, and yes, even the famous elderberry syrup. But have you priced store-bought elderberry products (at least the high-quality ones that aren’t filled with junk)? Wow. Let me tell you, you can grow your own for way cheaper, and not have to worry about them being out of stock either, if they’re growing right in your backyard. 😉

If you’d like to grow elderberries, you’re in for a treat. My friends over at Seeds for Generations have restocked live cuttings items just in time for fall/early winter planting – the best time to get them in the ground anyway!

Browse live elderberry cuttings here.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

Why grow elderberries? There are several reasons:

Immune-boosting & health properties: Elderberries are renowned for their immune-boosting properties, packed with antioxidants and vitamins that support overall wellness and vitality. Elderberries have a long history of medicinal use, known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties that can aid in managing colds, flu, and other ailments.

Culinary uses: From jams and syrups to pies and teas, elderberries offer a plethora of culinary possibilities, adding a flavorful twist to your dishes and beverages.

Wildlife habitat: Elderberry plants attract beneficial wildlife and are an important part of food forests and other perennial growing setups. Plus, the wood has been used in some forms of carpentry.
They have various varieties of elderberry cuttings in stock right now, but live plants always seem to go fast! Who knows how long they will last…

I grew plenty of vegetables in my garden, but as I’ve experimented, I’ve also learned that I like growing a lot of perennials too! They’re much lower maintenance once they’re established, and they keep coming back year after year, producing bigger harvests as the years pass too.

Looking for a way to get started? I suggest elderberry cuttings from my friends over at Seeds for Generations! They’re back in stock for the spring season. These plants are homesteader favorites, and this is high-quality stock from another small family business they trust, so it’s a great opportunity for you! Check them out at: <INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” ~Margaret Atwood

I’m so excited that spring is finally here! After a long winter, there’s just something about finally being able to get out there in the garden, dig in the dirt, plant my seeds, and enjoy the sunshine and birds singing around me. Gardening is my happy place!

Of course, when most of us think of gardening, we usually think about seeds first. And yes, they’re an important part of the growing season, no doubt.

But gardening doesn’t STOP with seeds.

Many of the most versatile plants are actually perennials that you start with live cuttings instead of seeds.

One of my personal favorites is comfrey.<INSERT AFFILIATE LINK

This is an amazing plant for homesteaders and gardeners – everyone should grow it. Seriously! It has so many uses, especially for folks like us who grow vegetables or fruit trees, since it helps pull out nutrients from the soil and makes them more available for plants when used as mulch or comfrey tea fertilizer. Plus, it has medicinal uses and some people I know even use it for feeding livestock.

If you’d like to try these live plants, you’re in for a treat. My friends over at Seeds for Generations have restocked roots just in time for spring planting!

When you order these comfrey root crowns and comfrey root pieces from my friends, you will be supporting a family business at the same time.

I’ve been there. You know that you need to order the seeds that you need, but you just haven’t found the time to set down and really sort through all of the options for yourself. A few minutes quickly morphs into a few hours, and then the entire afternoon if you’re not careful, as you get sucked into everything you could be growing in your garden.

Finally, you leave the computer with a cart of 10x more seeds than you need and then never end up ordering anything all…and the cycle continues. UGH.

Well, what if I told you there was a way you could shop heirloom seeds without having to make a bunch of individual decisions – just decide your primary goals for your garden this year and then pick a curated collection that you can purchase in just a few clicks.
