Sunflower – Skyscraper – Helianthus annus
Soil & Water: Loose, well-drained soil is ideal but sunflowers will tolerate poor soil. If growing in poor soil, add a balanced fertilizer with higher phosphorus. Moderate water is best.
Planting & Growing: Direct sow after last spring frost, or start inside 2 weeks earlier. Plant 2-3 seeds every foot, and thin to 18″ apart once seedlings are 3″ tall.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when the back of the seed head turns brown. Prompt harvest means more seeds for you, and less for the birds. Remove seeds from seed head by rubbing two heads together, or rubbing with your hand. Store seeds in cloth bags with good air circulation.
Did You Know? A sunflower head is actually 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers.
