Today is the day after Thanksgiving, and I trust that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family.
You’ve probably heard the story of the Pilgrims and their first thanksgiving celebration. Many do not know the continuing story of their humble gratefulness to God for everything, even in times of great want.
Not long after that first Thanksgiving in 1621, the extraordinarily harsh winter of 1621-22 descended upon them. Their supplies ran low. Their leader, William Bradford, instituted food rationing in order to enable them to last through the winter until more food could be procured in the spring.
Five kernels of corn. Per day.
And yet still they were thankful to God their provider.
To read more about this inspirational story, and to find a beautiful poem that artfully communicates the depths of the Pilgrims’ humble gratefulness, see my post over at Beyond off Grid called “What Five Kernels of Corn Teaches Us about Thankfulness”.
It is instructive to us on how thankful we should be.

In an age of instant gratification, they hold the promise of great fruitfulness in exchange for patience and a little hard work – just the thing that’s needed to battle the cultural predisposition towards easy thrills.
